Few have given the Indiana Pacers much of a chance to beat the Miami Heat in their Eastern Conference semifinals series. But then Heat forward Chris Bosh went out in Game 1 Sunday with an abdominal strain injury that could sideline him for a while. Might that trigger a similar confidence boost in the Pacers, whose gap with the Heat (No. 3 vs. No. 2) isn’t nearly as great?e of the top stories of the playoffs so far, beyond that many games have been unwatchable, is that Denver Nuggets center JaVale McGee played like a capable and effective pro. There’s a chance that, for as many silly plays as he’s made over the years, he could become one of the best centers in the league, even if he does nothing more than block shots, rebound and catch the ball around the basket for easy dunks and alley-oops.
Now that the Nuggets’ season is over, JaVale has a chance to work on his game this summer. As far as we know, he won’t be doing so as part of Team USA, either with the senior team or the select squad that practices and scrimmages with them before the London Olympics. In fact, McGee might play for another nation in international competition in the future. Oddly enough, he might end up playing for the Philippines.
McGee has been trying to become a naturalized citizen of the island country for som
“If the MVP [LeBron James] went down, maybe,” Indiana coach Frank Vogel said with a smile. “We understand that with Bosh out, there are some benefits to that. But they’re in some ways just as dangerous without him.”

e these sorts of columns just about every year, so this isn’t breaking news, but it is of great interest now that the NBA has whittled itself down to eight teams. The typical NBA center, apparently, has gone bye-bye, and we’re not sure if this is good or bad for the NBA. In a league that for decades was dominated by teams that seemed to boast the best big man around, the center position has become somewhat of an afterthought in the modern game. We think. Again, we’re not entirely sure if this is new news, or entirely correct analysis.
The Atlantic’s Kevin Fixler is the author of the newest piece, andseason games, Kevin Garnett played more than 38 minutes one measly time. In eight playoff games, he has already passed that number every time except for in Euro 2012 Jerseys a blowout first win against the Hawks and Game 2’s loss to the Sixers.
On Monday night, the Celtics were outscored by 17 points in the 14 minutes that Garnett sat. Coach Doc Rivers rested his key big man in the second and third quarters, which is precisely when Philadelphia grabbed control of the game and established, then fattened, a lead that the Celtics could not overcome despite Garnett playing the entire fourth quarter.
Back in February, Rivers moved Garnett to the center position. At this point in the playoffs, no descriptor could be more accurate. With Pierce and Allen struggling to produce on injured legs and Avery Bradley’s left arm reduced to dangling uselessness, Garnett is the hub of everything the Celtics do offensively and defensively — he is literally the center of the Celtics’ hopes.
Paul Pierce is shooting just 25 percent from the field and is moving terribly when Andre Iguodala, one of the premier wing defenders in the NBA, challenges him. In Game 2, Pierce was neither able to punish Evan Turner on the occasional switch nor use his usual craftiness to work his way to the free throw line (just two attempts) — a major part of Boston’s closing strategy.
Meanwhile, the Celtics can still rely on Ray Allen to drill spot-up attempts, but bone spurs prevent him from sustaining the offensive action for long, because of the challenges of sprinting through his customary circuit of baseline screens.
Both star wings have injuries that are expected to linger.
And with Rajon Rondo largely contained by the long and hardworking Turner (who is also big enough to deter Pierce when the Celtics force a switch with a 1-3 pick-and-roll), that leaves Garnett.
Like the rest of the NBA, the 76ers haven’t come he attributes the seeming lack of centers to the typical influences — that the rash of injuries to NBA centers has depleted what was an already-shrinking group of big men that actually wanted to play center in the first place, rather than growing up emulating Magic and Michael.
The NBA’s Twitter feed has a robust 5 million-plus, and counting, followers (5,011, 814 as of this morning). That dwarfs the National Football League’s 3,332,082, Major League Baseball’s 2,044,861 and the National Hockey League’s 1,166,503.
World Wrestling Entertainment also has about 1.1 million followers and the world’s soccer governing body, FIFA, has almost 800,000 followers.
up with an adequate answer to Garnett’s long-range shooting, and he’s been able to take advantage of the Sixers in the post, where he can create shots for himself and, when doubled, for his teammates. Philadelphia’s wing defenders present a tenacious and largely interchangeable thicket. The Celtics’ only reliable ways through involve Garnett. Even when he’s not the focal poin
The responsibility now lies with Parker and Duncan to make the call. If Duncan moves off the block to set a ball screen for Parker, we move on … ristle at a new backup role.
Coach Tom Thibodeau probably won’t have led his team to the NBA’s best regular season record for a third straight season and – let’s be honest – there’s no assurance Chicago would even qualify for the playoffs next spring. By April 28, 2013, any notions of a storybook Cheap Football Shirts spring return by the point guard might be moot. Thus the 2013-14 possibility.
Bravo to the Bulls, of course, for laying out the reality of Rose’s
